Novocaine in Review
A fun beginning to a predictable ending.
Jack Quaid, the artist formerly known as Huey, stars in this action comedy about a silly man with an intense condition. The movie starts off hot, literally, he gets burned by coffee 10 minutes into it. But the lady, Sherry (if that is her real name), who burns him makes up for it by banging. Jack's a happy boy, all is well, until- BANG! Santa's come for cash bud! And he takes the girl with him. Jack, having new confidence from his success on The Boys, decides to take matters into his own hands and hunts the three Santas who took his new bang buddy from him.
The next few set pieces are quite entertaining. The middle part is the best part. There's a lot of gore, a lot of action, and a good bit of laughs along the way. But, in the midst of all the fun, there is a reveal. The lady was in on it the whole time! To be fair, I didn't see that coming. But, was the reveal to soon? Yep, I think so.
The story takes a bit of a tumble downhill after it’s revealed that Sherry was in on the robbery the whole time. Right as it’s announced that her brother is the head Santa the potential tension was stripped away. Now we know she’s no longer in danger and our hero looks more like a dummy on quest to save a girl he had pitty sex with him to extract info rather than a noble hero risking it all to save the woman he’s been looking for his whole life. Yes, the reveal adds subtext but our perception of our characters has changed. If only they could’ve buried the lead for 20 more minutes the pay off would’ve been sweeter.
Also, the cops in this movie are nothing burger non-factors. Other than a few quips they serve no purpose, they’re not a threat. They use Nate to find the criminals rather than doing research of their own. Don't even care that one of them died, they had no impact on the story. Oh, Ned from Spider-Man was fun too.
May favorite parts of the movie were the action and Jack's performance. He's doing his thing but he's doing it well. He made me laugh and the action made me puke. Not literally but you get what I mean.
To summarize all that, they had me and then they lost me. But, it was fun while it lasted. Until next time, Jack Quaid.
Novocaine gets a Dyl score of 6/10.
